Gateway Medical Associates Receives Award for Quality Care

CAMP HILL, Pa. (June 13, 2008) – Gateway Medical Associates of Chester County, received an Award of Appreciation at the Keystone Health Care Quality Awards banquet for its success in implementing health information technology. This awards program is sponsored by Quality Insights of Pennsylvania, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for the Commonwealth.

Gateway Medical Associates began its work with Quality Insights more than three years ago as part of an electronic health record (EHR) pilot project. Since that time, Gateway has become a leader in implementation of health information technology.

Currently, all of Gateway’s physicians and providers use e-prescribing and are electronically receiving and reviewing lab and radiology results.  In addition to digital recording of patient visits, Gateway uses its EHR system to connect electronically to three local hospitals.  These capabilities improve the quality and coordination of care.

As reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer and the New England Journal of Medicine this month, only 4 % of US physicians have EHRs with these capabilities.

Currently, Gateway is working on a patient portal to facilitate electronic communication between patients and medical providers.

Gateway Medical Associates includes primary care and endocrine physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants at 8 locations throughout Chester County.  The association was founded 12 years ago by independent local physicians with the continuing goals of providing leadership and excellence in patient care.
